CARGO · CLOTHING
Clothing shipping from China
Clothing usually travels by sea in 70 days or by rail in 35–45: it has medium density, and on these modes the cost per kilogram works out sensibly. For a collection that has to make the season, rail does the job; for planned replenishment, sea. At our warehouse in China we repack the goods out of factory boxes into compact packages — across a consignment that is a real saving in volume.
What makes clothing a specific kind of cargo
Clothing is medium-density cargo: not as bulky as furniture and not as heavy as spare parts. So there is no single right answer of "sea only" or "air only" — the deadline decides everything. If the consignment is planned, sea gives the lowest cost. If a collection has to be in the warehouse before the season starts and the order was confirmed late, rail fits into 35–45 days. We rarely price air for clothing: mostly for samples and small top-up orders of fast-moving lines.
The main source of savings in this category is not the tariff but the volume. Factories pack clothing into boxes in whatever way suits the production floor, with air inside. In consolidated cargo you pay for every cubic metre of that air.
What we do with the consignment at the warehouse in China
Receipt and counting
The supplier delivers to our warehouse in Guangzhou, Yiwu or another city. We receive the goods and check the number of packages and line items against the order.
Repacking
We transfer the goods out of loosely filled factory boxes into compact packages: compressing soft goods, removing empty space, combining part-filled boxes. Less volume means a lower delivery cost.
Quality check
Where required we inspect the consignment: matching models, sizes and colours against the order, examining seams and fabric on a sample basis, taking photographs. A claim against the factory works while the goods are still in China.
Labelling
We check the labelling on the items — fabric composition, size, manufacturer. For customs, fabric composition is not a formality: it determines the HS code and therefore the payments.
Documents and customs
Clothing requires no permits — but it does require care with classification. The HS code depends on the fabric composition, the type of garment and sometimes on whether it is menswear or womenswear. An error in classification means either overpaying on duties or a customs query with the cargo held up. We reconcile the fabric composition on the labels against what is declared in the documents before departure, not at the border.
If you are assembling a range from several factories — knitwear from one, outerwear from another, trims from a third — the consignments are consolidated at our warehouse into a single shipment. From suppliers on 1688 and Taobao we purchase the goods ourselves.
